From the Family of Lilly Horner
It is with a heavy heart that we share that our Lilly Horner passed away Friday evening. She was at the visiting nurses hospice house in East Northport surrounded by her family. Lilly was born September 16, 1935 in a small fishing village that was cut off from the rest of the island for nine out of 12 months right on the Arctic Circle. She came to America in her teens, not knowing a word of English but with a great sense of adventure. She worked at the Icelandic embassy and taught herself English by watching "I Love Lucy" and was very proud of that. She loved living in HBCA. She and her husband Helmuth bought their house on Coolidge from George Rousseau back in the 1960's. She had said she was asked frequently if she would ever move back to Iceland, to which she always answered with an emphatic "NO". She told anyone who would listen that Centerport was a slice of heaven.
She is survived by her son Christian, his wife, Carolyn, and their three children: Michael, Thomas, and Catherine, who were raised around the corner on Fillmore Street. She will be waked tomorrow at Nolan's funeral home in Northport from 10 to 1 PM. Please come and celebrate the wonderful life of Lilly Horner, or raise a glass of champagne in her honor. She would love that too.
